Even though our fictional Clear Springs is in Indiana (and in NO WAY resembles the actual Clear Springs, Indiana, which we didn’t realize was an actual town until after the first two books were written…oops), it also includes a lot of June’s native state of Wisconsin, and really, we built in a lot of general midwestern standards.
So whether you’re basking in the nostalgia or taking a virtual getaway, these cheesy apple sage scones will put you right on the town square. They’re the ones Marnie makes in Chapter 13 of Fairly Frozen!
Marnie's Cheddar Sage Scones
Prep Time 30 minutes mins

Total Time 1 hour hr
Course Appetizer, Breakfast, Snack
- 3 cups All-purpose Flour
- 1 Tbsp Baking Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 cup Unsalted Butter cold, cubed
- 1 Egg, Large room temperature
- 3/4 cup Vanilla Yogurt
- 3 Tbsp Milk
- 1/3 cup Apple grated
- 1/3 cup Sharp Cheddar shredded
- 1 Tbsp Fresh Sage minced
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
Preheat oven to 425º F (adjust down for convection)
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl, then cut butter in with a pastry cutter until you've got a bowl of coarse mealy crumbs.
Combine egg, yogurt, and 2T of the milk in a separate bowl, then stir the wet ingredients into the dry until it just starts to come together
Add apple, cheese, and fresh sage
Turn the whole gooey mess out onto a clean, lightly floured counter, then knead gently until it just barely forms a ball. Note: Don't overknead here, or the scones will be tough and chewy, and you dont' want anyone breaking a tooth, do you? Divide dough in half, then gently form each ball into a six-inch circle and cut each into eight wedges.
Bake on parchment lined baking sheets for 12-14 minutes until golden.
